Many components in hair colouring products can irritate the skin and trigger allergic responses. The majority of allergic contact dermatitis instances induced by hair colour are caused by a component known as paraphenylenediamine (PPD).
PPD is a chemical present in many products, including temporary tattoo ink, printer ink, and gasoline. PPD is frequently packaged separately from an oxidizer in boxed hair colouring.
When both are combined, PPD is slightly oxidised. This is when it is most prone to produce adverse responses in those who are allergic to it.
